Button Up Your Home This Winter

Winter is officially here, keep the warm air in and the cold air out. Experts say it is possible to save on your energy bill by taking the right precautions. Here are some useful ideas to keep your home warm and cozy during these cold Ohio winter months.

TCHT House Note #1: HVAC Service Time

Schedule an appointment for your heating equipment to be examined by a certified professional. It is important that your equipment is in working condition to not only save on energy costs, but to also prevent fire hazards (this should be done every 6 months). Most homes here in Columbus use Columbia Gas of Ohio, take advantage of their "in-home energy audit" to see where you can improve energy efficiency in your home.

TCHT House Note #2: Easy In, Easy Out

Don't get stuck in the cold, consider a keyless entry lock. Eliminate searching for your keys by installing an electric entry door deadbolt. Create a passcode or even use you and your family members finger prints to lock and unlock the door with ease. These keyless entry locks start around $60.00 depending on your local hardware store. These are a great investment considering the average lock smith service call starts at $95.00!

TCHT House Note #3: Thermostat Tips

Try to keep your thermostat around 68 degrees. Energy Choice Ohio suggests that by keeping it around 68 degrees as well as, turning it back during the night or while you are away from home can save you up to 3% on your heating bill. Consider installing a "Smart Home Thermostat", also commonly known as a "Wifi Thermostat" to help regulate the temperature of your home by a compatible device (phone, tablet, etc) while you are home or away. Not only does this help maintain energy efficiency, it adds resale value to your home!

TCHT House Note #4: Draft Talk

Be aware of drafty spaces. Cold air can fit through anything. Use weather-stripping, caulk, or window insulation film to seal drafts tightly. All three are fairly inexpensive and can be bought at any local hardware store. Be sure to check windows, doors (including your garage door) and your chimney flue to insure that cold air is kept outside as these are the three most common place cold air sneaks through.
